The quickest way to make a real person wig look more high-end and enhance the shine of the hair is to dye it with a salon level pick dye. As long as you master the partitioning techniques and dyeing heat, you can create high-end hair colors with distinct layers and natural transitions at home!

Essential Tools and Supplies for Highlighting A Wig

Preparing professional tools before starting to dye a human hair wig is crucial to avoid damaging the hair strands and mesh cap. The price of real hair wigs is relatively high, and it is recommended to use a medium concentration brightening product for operation.

Tools

Purpose

Operating Notes

Mannequin Head & T-Pins

Secure the wig shape and section the hair

Prevents the wig from slipping or hair from tangling during the bleaching and dyeing process.

Bleach Powder & Developer

Lighten hair (20 Vol or 30 Vol recommended)

20 Vol is gentler and beginner-friendly; 30 Vol lifts color faster.

Aluminum Foil Sheets

Isolate highlighted hair sections

Prevents bleach from bleeding onto lower hair layers that should not be dyed.

Tint Brush & Mixing Bowl

Evenly mix and apply bleach powder

A non-metallic bowl must be used to prevent chemical reactions.

Purple Shampoo & Conditioner

Neutralize brassiness and deeply nourish

Removes brassy tones after bleaching to restore a refined color balance.

Pre-Color Preparation: Protecting the Lace and Hair Strands

The most common mistake many beginners make when doing DIY highlights is allowing bleach powder to leak into the lace cap, resulting in the knots on the cap being bleached and disrupting the overall natural hairline.

Strand Test: Conduct a test using a small strand of hair from the inner side of the wig to observe the durability and fading speed of the hair quality.

Protect lace net hat: Wrap a layer of plastic wrap around the lace or the wig headform, or spray hard hairspray on the net hat and let it dry, forming a barrier.

Comb the hair: Use a wide-tooth comb to gently comb the hair from the ends upwards, ensuring that there are no knots.

How To Add Highlights To A Human Hair Wig

You can easily achieve a salon-level highlight and lowlight effect at home using the following method.

1.Section the Wig for Precise Placement: Determine the layout and partition of highlights

Fix the wig onto the headform. Use a comb and hair clips to divide the wig into four major areas: the front sides, the top PartING area, and the back of the head. Choose a highlights method based on the desired style:

Weaving Technique (weave highlights): suitable for natural and delicate line perception.

Slicing Technique (Slicing/Line Highlighting): suitable for clear layering and strong contrast.

2.Mix bleach and hydrogen peroxide

Mix the bleach powder in the bowl according to the prescribed ratio. Stir until it becomes a smooth, viscous, particle free paste, and then you can start the operation.

3.Use aluminum foil paper

From the bottom of the wig. Place a foil underneath and use a brush to evenly apply bleach powder onto the wig

Hair root details: Apply from the edge of the hair root and lace to achieve a seamless transition effect.

Isolation: Fold the aluminum foil up and down to seal it and isolate the hair in that area.

4.Observe the progress of fading and the duration of observation

Let it sit for 20 to 40 minutes. Check the degree of hair fading at regular intervals. When the hair reaches the desired yellow/gold color, it can be rinsed.

5.Rinse, remove yellow tones, and perform deep care

Rinse off bleach thoroughly with warm water. If there is a light yellow or light red color, you can use purple shampoo or professional toner to adjust the tone. Finally, apply a sufficient amount of hair mask or conditioner.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Highlighting A Wig

To maintain the lifespan and natural appearance of the wig, the following points should be noted:

Avoid over-bleaching the knots: If bleach gets on the roots of the lace cap, it can damage the wig clasp and cause hair loss.

Do not overuse high-concentration hydrogen peroxide: Wig hair is not nourished by the oil secreted by the scalp, and using 40 Vol Developer can easily cause hair breakage and dryness.

Moisturizing care after highlights: After bleaching and dyeing, wigs must be regularly nourished with argan oil and leave-in conditioner.

How to Style and Maintain Highlighted Human Hair Wigs

After the highlight wigs are done, proper maintenance can make the highlights last longer and appear brighter:

1.Low-temperature styling: When using curling irons or straightening combs, keep the temperature within 150°C - 180°C, and spray heat-resistant spray before styling.

2. After air-drying the hair, gently wrap it with a water-absorbing towel to absorb excess moisture. Try to let the wig air-dry naturally on the headform to reduce heat damage from the hair dryer.
