How To Remove Odour From Wigs

Aug 9, 2023

Heading out with a wig on and someone points out that your hair stinks? In fact, wigs are made of human hair or synthetic hair. If not cleaned properly, they can linger on with some odd odors. Especially for beginners who just started wearing wigs, they don't know how to wash wigs. So in order not to go through such embarrassment anymore, but also to keep your wig comfortable and smelling good, here are some tips for deodorizing human hair wigs.

Tips for removing odour from wigs:

Clean

Regular cleaning of your wig is essential to eliminate odors. How often you wash your wig depends on how you use it, your lifestyle, and a few other factors. If you often wear a wig to expose yourself to dust, smoke and other odors, or if you often wear a wig for exercise, your scalp will sweat easily, and the wig will accumulate a lot of these dusty odors. If so, you'd better wash the wig every day.

Air dry

It is best to keep the wig dry at all times. Damp hair or high humidity can cause odor. Therefore, after washing the wig, it is best to dry it in a ventilated and cool place (do not expose it to the sun, it is easy to damage the wig).

Store correctly

After the wig is not worn, it should be thoroughly cleaned and stored in a box after it is completely dry. Wigs should also be kept in a well-ventilated area free of unpleasant odours, if they are only removed temporarily and re-worn periodically. It should not be placed in the bathroom, kitchen, etc., nor should it be exposed to the sun.

Dry sheet

After a few weeks or months of use, the wig will gradually lose its freshness and begin to accumulate an unpleasant odor. So when cleaning the wig, you can use some good-smelling shampoo and conditioner, which will not only make the wig soft, but also smell better. If the smell persists, you will need to use an absorbent dryer sheet to get rid of these unwanted odors, as the dryer sheet can effectively warm and remove built-up dirt particles and sebum. This is a temporary fix, but it will get rid of the smell for a short time. Quickly and effectively removes odors in less than a minute, leaving you with a brand new wig.

Baking soda

Sodium bicarbonate is undoubtedly the best household product for removing all kinds of odors. It effectively absorbs and neutralizes bad odors. Especially in synthetic hair, baking soda can be effective in removing odors from wigs. Dilute with a spoonful of baking soda. Then apply the mixture all over the wig, especially the bottom of the net, and let it sit for a few minutes. Finally, wash as usual to remove residual baking soda particles and dirt from the wig. Plus, baking soda can deep clean your wig. Fill a container with cold water and add a few teaspoons of baking soda. Soak the wig in soda water for 20-40 minutes, then wash

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another natural neutralizer that can also remove bad smells from wigs. If your wig hasn't been used in a while and has a musty smell, use apple cider vinegar to get rid of the smell. As a natural product, apple cider vinegar won't harm your hair, but it can lighten the color of your wig. Add a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to warm water and soak the wig.

Apple cider vinegar dissolves sebum and dirt from your wig. It takes about an hour or so to remove the remaining chemicals and odors from the wig. Then remove the wig, rinse with cool water as usual, and use some conditioner to get rid of the apple cider vinegar smell. Plus, apple cider vinegar adds shine and softness to wigs.
